Unique gifts that help end world hunger | Heifer International

Dear MoveOn member,

California led the nation in requiring all electronic voting machines to print Voter-Verified Paper Records (VVPRs), allowing you to verify your vote is recorded correctly before leaving the voting booth. But Secretary of State Bruce McPherson is trying to gut the law by allowing county election officials to ignore VVPRs in audits and recounts.

The California state legislature has passed a bill insisting verified votes be used in audits and recounts. Now the governor is deciding whether to sign the bill into law or veto it. A veto would undermine public trust in our elections. But his own secretary of state is pushing him to veto S.B. 370, so he needs to hear from the public today.

Can you call the governor and ask him to support S.B. 370 to keep our elections reliable?

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
(916) 445-2841
governor@governor.ca.gov

It's important that we track our impact. Please let us know you're calling, at:

http://www.moveonpac.org/call/?cp_id=94&tg=21&id=5980-2089656-5pkxFb.pn.Xp98QqJ8gBZg&t=1

S.B. 370 would strip verified voting of its teeth by allowing unverified ballots to be used in audits and recounts. Unverified recounts might be easier and quicker, but the whole point is to safeguard against software glitches or fraud, particularly in close races.

The governor can ensure fair elections by signing S.B. 370. Call him today at:

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
(916) 445-2841
governor@governor.ca.gov

Thank you for all you do,

On August 1, the Royal Court of Saudi Arabia announced with great sadness the death of our beloved leader, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud following a prolonged illness. King Fahd played a significant role in bringing Saudi Arabia to the forefront of the modern world. Throughout his 23-year rule, King Fahd reformed the education system, diversified the economy, and built a world-renowned infrastructure. Internationally, King Fahd played a critical role in forging alliances between Saudi Arabia and the global community, including strengthening the relationship between the Kingdom and the United States. In his capacity as a head of state, King Fahd worked with numerous presidents and prime ministers to prevent the spread of communism and to fight the scourge of terrorism. He also worked tirelessly to bring about peace in the Middle East.

In accordance with Article 5 of the Saudi Basic Law of Governance, Crown Prince Abdullah was declared King of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia immediately following the passing of King Fahd. The new Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques then issued a royal order confirming his choice of Crown Prince and Deputy Prime Minister: Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector-General Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz.

King Abdullah is celebrated for his integrity, his wisdom, and his commitment. Through his leadership, Saudi Arabia has made great strides in the war against terrorism. King Abdullah initiated a campaign against extremism that has resulted in the killing of about 90 militants and capturing over 800. King Abdullah also led the Kingdom’s reform efforts by initiating municipal elections, encouraging economic development through privatization, and fostering dialogue on important issues facing the Kingdom. He is well-respected both by the nations of the Arab world and by the United States.

King Fahd’s funeral was held today, August 2, at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh and was attended by many international leaders, presidents and delegations from across the world. Vice President Cheney will lead the American delegation to Riyadh this week to express condolences to King Abdullah and the people of Saudi Arabia.

NRDC's EARTH ACTION:
The Bulletin for Environmental Activists

April 20, 2005
========================================

Special alert for Earth Activists:
Tell Bayer to stop selling toxic lindane in the United States
Call 1-919-549-2828 *tomorrow* between 9am and 5pm eastern time

======================================================

Although it is most famous for making and selling aspirin, the chemical giant
Bayer also sells the highly toxic pesticide lindane, even though the chemical
has been banned in more than 35 countries around the world. Please join a
national call-in day to urge Bayer to stop selling this dangerous pesticide.

== What to do ==
Join a national call-in day to Bayer's Crop Sciences North American
headquarters tomorrow, Thursday, April 21st, from 9am - 5pm eastern time. The
call-in number is:
1-919-549-2828
where you can leave a message for Wayne Carlson, the Vice President of
Regulatory Affairs (please note, this is not a toll-free call).

Please tell Mr. Carlson that you are calling to urge Bayer to stop selling
lindane. You might also mention that:
-- lindane is an old, dangerous and unnecessary pesticide;
-- lindane has been banned in more than 35 countries, including Germany, Japan
and Brazil;
-- any of your own reasons why you think Bayer should stop selling lindane (see
below for more information about this toxic chemical).

== More about lindane ==
Lindane is an old, dangerous pesticide that targets the central nervous system
and can cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, seizures and coma. The chemical
builds up in our bodies, and is found in blood and breast milk in people
worldwide (children are especially vulnerable to its toxic effects). Lindane is
also highly toxic to wildlife, including fish, bees and birds.

More than 35 countries have already banned lindane -- but the United States
isn't one of them. Bayer distributes lindane for agricultural purposes here,
despite threats to our health, environment and food supply.

Please call Bayer tomorrow at 1-919-549-2828 and urge it to stop distributing
lindane immediately.

Please also forward this message to others, and urge them to call Bayer
tomorrow as well.

Thank you!

Dear MoveOn member,

A great majority of the families that declared bankruptcy last year did so because of a major life crisis—huge medical bills or layoffs—that threw them into a spiral of debt. Now, after a multi-year, multi-million dollar lobbying effort by credit card companies, Congress is poised Wednesday to approve a sweeping change in bankruptcy law that would make it impossible for folks who have been dealt a bad hand to get a clean start. The law actually gives credit card companies new ways to seize your home and car if you get into financial trouble.

After accepting more than $620,000 from the lending industry to his various PACs, Republican Majority Leader Rep. Tom DeLay has scheduled the vote for Wednesday. The change in bankruptcy laws is a clear example of whose interests the Republicans in Congress are serving. But, in a betrayal of middle class families, as many as 90 Democrats may also vote the wrong way. Both Republicans and Democrats need to know that millions of us oppose this bonanza for corporate contributors that hurts families who are the victims of circumstances beyond their control.

We need to show Congress that we're watching. Today we're asking you to make a pledge to contribute for radio ads in the hometowns of representatives, both Republicans and Democrats, who vote wrong on this bill. We'll announce the amount of the pledge fund TOMORROW, before the vote on Wednesday, so that members of Congress know there are consequences for their votes.

Please click below to check out the script of the radio ad and make your pledge today:

http://www.moveonpac.org/radiopledge?id=5343-2089656-MDipBEdAIHp_.7FyqjorIw

By making a pledge now, we can show representatives who are on the fence that there are serious consequences for hurting Americans in order to help the nation's credit card companies. The radio ads will play an important deterrent to future corporate grabs—the text reveals how much the member of Congress received from the lending industry and how the bill hurts middle class families.

What's wrong with the bankruptcy legislation? A lot. More than 1.5 million families had to declare bankruptcy last year—half because of unexpected and extraordinary medical expenses. Millions more totter on the edge of bankruptcy. The large numbers of bankruptcies is a clear sign about the tenuous state of the economy—millions of Americans who work hard and play by the rules could be pushed at any time to financial ruin by job loss, business failure or major medical expenses. The pressure valve for these families has historically been bankruptcy but now Congress is making things tougher for these hard-working folks in order to secure billions in profits for creditors.

The legislation Congress will vote on is more than 500 pages long, all in highly technical language. But the Republican leadership and corporate lobbyists are in such a rush to push it through that the text is full of misspellings and repeated phrases. Representatives might not even be allowed to make amendments. But the overall thrust is pretty clear:

  • Make families pay more to creditors, both in bankruptcy and after bankruptcy, so that instead of offering a clean start, a bankruptcy filing will leave families burdened by credit card debt, car loans, and continued payments to banks or to payday lenders.

  • Make it more expensive to file for bankruptcy by driving up fees so that the people in the most trouble can't afford to file.

  • Make it trickier to get through a bankruptcy so that more people will get pushed out of bankruptcy with no debt relief.

  • Make it harder to repay debts by increasing the minimum payments in repayment plans.

  • Preserve at all costs the millionaires' loopholes—special privileges that allow the super-rich to escape their debts by hiding their money in special exemptions and trusts.

Banking and credit card companies have fought for such legislation since 1997 but repeatedly failed to win congressional approval. Like pigs at the trough, the banks and credit card companies are feasting now that the Bush administration has a second term. This legislation has sailed through Congress this year with only a whiff of opposition.

That isn't surprising: According to the Center for Responsive Politics, MBNA, Credit Suisse First Boston, Bank of America and Wachovia were among the top contributors to Bush's two campaigns in 2000 and 2004, giving more than $300,000 in total donations. MBNA also was one of the top contributors to Republican candidates and committees in the 2004 elections with some $7.3 million in political donations. And now they're poised to reap rewards from their investment.

Huge corporate bankruptcies, like Enron and WorldCom, have cost thousands of people their jobs. But instead of addressing corporations run amok, Congress is helping these companies run rough-shod over Americans.

Congress needs to know that a vote for this bill will be an embarrassing vote siding with credit card companies over America's families. Please click below to make your pledge:

http://www.moveonpac.org/radiopledge?id=5343-2089656-MDipBEdAIHp_.7FyqjorIw

The changes in bankruptcy laws are just the start. This week the radical Republican leadership, like Rep. Tom DeLay, have declared a war on ordinary Americans with a corporate trifecta: bankruptcy law changes, a permanent repeal of the estate tax (which only affects the super-rich), and a budget that cuts health care and explodes the debt.

Ultimately, we need to change who runs Congress to stop the assault on America's middle class. Every action we take now is one step in that direction. Please act today.

Thanks for all you do.

The Sour Side Effects of Splenda

If you use Splenda because you think it's a safe alternative to sugar and
Nutrasweet, you might be in for some sour news. Splenda is the brand name of
the artificial sweetener sucralose, which is created by adding chlorine
molecules to sugar.

There have been no independent human tests regarding the long-term safety of
this product. That's reason enough to be wary. But there was a study of its
effect on rats that was published in the FDA's Federal Register. It showed
that rats that were given sucralose experienced shrunken thalamus glands,
enlarged livers and kidneys, reduced growth rate, reduced red blood cell
count, aborted pregnancies, and diarrhea.

If you ingest Splenda in any amount, I urge you to read firsthand accounts
of its harmful effects. There are more than 30 posted on Dr. Mercola's
website.

And if you're looking for a safe way to satisfy your sweet tooth, consider
all-natural stevia extract. Stevia is made from the leaves of a South
American plant. It's non-glycemic, contains no calories, and -- after
hundreds of years of use -- has no known side effects. It might seem
expensive by volume, but it's hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, so a
little goes a long way. You can find stevia in any health food store.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

A car is not meant to be stowed away in a garage. It is meant for the roads, for taking you speedily and safely to your destination. So too, your body must serve its purpose of carrying you on your journey. Journey to where? Not, as has been happening, to the cemetery. You have nobler things to do than to merely die! You must know your own Reality before you die, and merge in that Supreme Bliss. Use the body to discover your own Divinity. Sanctify every moment of your sojourn on earth through pious deeds and sacred thoughts

Hi Thomas,

In the name of fighting terrorism, the Bush Administration has pursued policies that have eroded many of the freedoms Americans hold dear. Principles that made the United States the envy of the world, such as the right to privacy for law-abiding citizens, are under threat like never before.

As the Bush Administration begins to develop its second term agenda and members of Congress are asked to consider a new crop of political appointees, we urge you to take the "I Refuse to Surrender My Freedom" pledge.

Remind our elected officials that, as a patriotic American, you strongly believe in:

  • The right to voice dissent

  • A woman's right to choose

  • A clear separation of church and state

  • The extension of equal rights to all people, including lesbians and gays

  • An amended Patriot Act that enhances US security while safeguarding our privacy

In cooperation with the American Civil Liberties Union, our goal is to recruit 100,000 citizens by Inauguration Day to take this simple pledge:

"I pledge to join with over 400,000 ACLU members and supporters to help ensure that the President, his administration, and our leaders in Congress fulfill their duty to preserve, protect, and defend our Constitution."

Take the pledge now and stand strong in support of freedom: http://www.care2.com/go/z/19215

Hi Thomas,

Chocolate and coffee are two of my favorite things, but I worry about purchasing these products when I hear stories of the desperate poverty in which so many small cocoa and coffee farmers live. But there is hope this holiday season - Fair trade.

Fair trade offers a real solution to the crises of poverty and child labor - including child slavery - experienced by many small farmers in the developing world. Trade truly is a human rights issue, and I hope you'll join me in calling on major retailers and producers to support Fair Trade Certified products this holiday season. Thank you for receiving "Eye on Human Rights" from Care2 and ThePetitionSite, and please act today.

In this issue:
1. This Holiday Season - Make Trade Fair for Farmers!
2. Urge M&M/Mars to Sell Fair Trade Certified Chocolate

1. This Holiday Season - Make Trade Fair for Farmers!
Petition: http://www.care2.com/go/z/19161

Family farmers around the world are suffering. But we can solve this problem by changing unfair trade policies. Our tax dollars supposedly support family farmers. But, in fact, they're predominantly benefiting a small number of wealthy, industrial-sized farms.

What's more, large government payouts lead to overproduction. Crops are dumped onto the world market and sold for less than the cost of production. That drives prices down, often making it impossible for family farmers in developing countries to make a living and feed their families.

This holiday season, join the tens of thousands of people who are participating in Oxfam's Fast for a World Harvest and take a moment to email President Bush. Call on him to do his part to help end hunger by reforming U.S. farm policy: http://www.care2.com/go/z/19161

2. Urge M&M/Mars to Sell Fair Trade Certified Chocolate
Petition: http://www.care2.com/go/z/19163

There's nothing sweet about child slavery.

Companies like M&M/Mars, the world's biggest chocolate company, make huge profits selling chocolate. Their products are favorites among children around the world. However, chocolate is no treat for the hundreds of thousands of child cocoa laborers who work on their poor families' farms or even as slaves on cocoa farms far from home.

The U.S. chocolate industry has agreed to work to end child slavery by 2005, but their plan involves "voluntary standards" and does not guarantee fair and stable cocoa prices, which is the only way to end child slavery and exploitation for good.

The solution? Fair trade. Fair trade guarantees a minimum price per pound (a living wage), prohibits abusive child labor and forced labor, requires independent monitoring, and promotes environmental sustainability. But M&M/Mars has refused to sell Fair Trade Certified chocolate.

Chocolate lovers everywhere - we have the power to make a real difference in the lives of poor children in cocoa-producing nations! Please urge M&M/Mars to do the right thing, and commit to selling Fair Trade Certified chocolate: http://www.care2.com/go/z/19163

WASHINGTON, Saturday, Nov. 20 - House and Senate negotiators have tucked a potentially far-reaching anti-abortion provision into a $388 billion must-pass spending bill, complicating plans for Congress to wrap up its business and adjourn for the year.

The provision may be an early indication of the growing political muscle of social conservatives who provided crucial support for Republican candidates, including President Bush, in the election.

House officials said Saturday morning that the final details of the spending measure were worked out before midnight and that the bill was filed for the House vote on Saturday.

The abortion language would bar federal, state and local agencies from withholding taxpayer money from health care providers that refuse to provide or pay for abortions or refuse to offer abortion counseling or referrals. Current federal law, aimed at protecting Roman Catholic doctors, provides such "conscience protection'' to doctors who do not want to undergo abortion training. The new language would expand that protection to all health care providers, including hospitals, doctors, clinics and insurers.

"It's something we've had a longstanding interest in," said Douglas Johnson, a spokesman for the National Right to Life Committee. He added, "This is in response to an orchestrated campaign by pro-abortion groups across the country to use government agencies to coerce health care providers to participate in abortions."

The provision could affect millions of American women, according to Senator Barbara Boxer, Democrat of California, who warned Friday that she would use procedural tactics to slow Senate business to a crawl if the language was not altered.

"I am willing to stand on my feet and slow this thing down," Ms. Boxer said. "Everyone wants to go home, I know that, and I know I will not win a popularity contest in the Senate. But they should not be doing this. On a huge spending bill they're writing law, and they're taking away rights from women."

Ms. Boxer said that she complained to Senator Ted Stevens, the Alaska Republican who is the chairman of the Appropriations Committee, but that he told her that House Republican leaders insisted that the provision, which was approved by the House in July but never came to the Senate for a vote, be included in the measure.

"He said, 'Senator, they want it in, and it's going in,' " Ms. Boxer recalled.

A spokeswoman for Mr. Stevens, Melanie Alvord, said on Friday that her boss would have no comment on the spending bill because House and Senate negotiators had not settled on the final language.

Some lawmakers and Congressional aides interpreted the House leaders' insistence as reflection of the new political strength of the anti-abortion movement and of Christian conservatives, who played an important role in re-electing Mr. Bush this month.

"They are catering to their right wing doing this," said Senator Tom Harkin, Democrat of Iowa. "It doesn't make it right. I think this is the first step."

Mr. Harkin said he intended to try to force a vote next year on support for upholding the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, which legalized abortion. "I think it is time the women of America understand what is happening here," he said.

The spending measure, called an omnibus bill, was the main reason Congress returned to Washington after the election, and members of both parties say that despite Ms. Boxer's warnings, it is likely to pass with the abortion language intact.

The alternative is to let government funding for a wide array of agencies - like the F.B.I., the National Park Service and the Environmental Protection Agency - run out, in effect causing a partial government shutdown.

Lawmakers in the House and the Senate intended to vote on the omnibus bill on Saturday, when a stopgap spending measure is set to expire at midnight. Congress failed to pass 9 of its 13 required spending bills before its election recess, leaving much of the government - with the exception of the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security - to operate under the interim measure.

The 11th-hour controversy over the abortion language capped a long and chaotic day Friday. In the House, the ethics committee ruled that a Democratic lawmaker had brought exaggerated charges against Representative Tom DeLay of Texas, the majority leader, a finding that provoked another round of bitter recriminations between Republicans and Democrats.

In the Senate, the Democratic leader, Tom Daschle of South Dakota, who lost his re-election bid, delivered a poignant farewell speech that brought him a standing ovation.

"It's had its challenges, its triumphs, its disappointments," Mr. Daschle said of his 26-year career in Congress, which included a decade as the Democratic leader. "But everything was worth doing."
